Dump & Drop-Off Options for Pickering, Ajax and Whitby (2026)

Hours, fees and accepted materials last checked against the operators' pages on October 20, 2026. Confirm with the facility before a long drive.

There is no Region of Durham waste facility in Pickering, Ajax or Whitby. West-Durham residents have two choices: drive east to the Region's Oshawa facility on Ritson Road, or use one of the two private Miller Waste Systems transfer stations — 1220 Squires Beach Road in Pickering and 2000 Wentworth Street in Whitby. The Region only pays for one thing at the Pickering site: household hazardous waste, which is free for Durham residents there.

Miller sets its own hours, rates, tax and fuel surcharge, and the Region tells residents to confirm them directly before going. The figures below were read from Miller's and the Region's pages on October 20, 2026.

Before You Go

  • Hazardous waste from Pickering, Ajax or Whitby goes to the Pickering depot (Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) — not Whitby, which does not take it.
  • Miller's $10 minimum covers 60 kg; the $165-per-tonne rate is plus tax and a monthly fuel surcharge, so the scale price is higher than the headline.
  • Electronics and scrap metal are free at the Pickering site; keep them separate from a paid load.
  • Shingles are $111.01 per tonne at Whitby versus $165 at Pickering — a real difference on a roofing job.
  • Both Miller depots open at 7 a.m. on weekdays, earlier than the Region's 8 a.m., and both are closed Sundays.

Or skip the trip — we haul it from $55

A depot run means a truck, your own back, a line at the scale and a fee by weight. RJR Demo & Junk comes to you anywhere in Durham Region from $55 ($35 per cubic yard), loads everything — basement, garage or curb — and sorts it for donation and recycling, often the same day. A single appliance runs $55–$150, with no freon surcharge and no truck rental.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dump in Pickering?

Not a Region-run one. The Miller Waste Durham transfer station at 1220 Squires Beach Road (905-426-4222) is a private depot open to the public — Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sunday — with a $10 minimum for 60 kg or less and $165 per tonne plus tax and fuel. Its hazardous-waste depot is free for Durham residents, Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Is there a dump in Whitby?

The private Miller Waste transfer station at 2000 Wentworth Street, Whitby (905-725-0899) takes residential waste, wood, drywall, concrete, shingles and yard waste at a $165-per-tonne gate rate with a $10 minimum plus tax and fuel, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It does not accept household hazardous waste. The nearest Region facility is Oshawa, on Ritson Road North.

Where do Ajax residents take garbage and junk?

Ajax has no depot of its own. The closest options are the Miller transfer station in Pickering (1220 Squires Beach Road) and the Region of Durham's Oshawa Waste Management Facility (1640 Ritson Road North, Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., $7 minimum). For paint, batteries and chemicals, the Pickering depot's hazardous-waste area is free for Ajax residents.

What does the Pickering transfer station charge?

Miller lists a $10 minimum for loads of 60 kg or less, $165 per metric tonne plus tax for waste and shingles, $5.99 per load plus tax for Blue Box material, and no charge for electronics or scrap metal. Every price is subject to a monthly fuel charge, and vehicles are weighed on entry.

Is it worth the trip, or should I just call a junk removal service?

A light load you can lift into a car or truck is cheapest at the depot — $10 plus tax, fuel and your time. For bulky items, a basement or garage clean-out, or anything heavy, RJR Demo & Junk picks up at your Pickering, Ajax or Whitby home from $55 ($35 per cubic yard), does all the loading, and donates or recycles what it can — usually within a day. A single appliance runs $55–$150.
