Every municipality in Durham Region runs a large-item program, and every one of them has a catch: a two-item limit on your garbage day in Ajax and Pickering, a booking at least two business days ahead and a six-item cap in Oshawa, a $27 fee in Whitby, appointment-only in Clarington — and in all of them, you carry it to the curb yourself. Large item pickup from RJR is the version without the catch: as many items as you have, from inside the house, on the day you choose.
Pricing is by the space the items take in the truck — $55 minimum, $35 per cubic yard — so one bulky item and a truckload are both priced fairly. A single appliance runs $55–$150; single furniture pieces are quoted from a photo.

Frequently Asked Questions — Large Item Pickup
What counts as a large item?
Anything that won't fit in a garbage bag: mattresses, couches, dressers, appliances, barbecues, exercise equipment, carpet rolls, hot tubs, pianos. If it's too big or too heavy for one person to carry to the curb, it's a large item to us — and we bring the people to carry it.
Doesn't the city pick up large items for free?
Sometimes. Ajax and Pickering collect up to two items on your regular garbage day; Oshawa's program is free but needs a booking two business days ahead and caps you at six items; Whitby charges $27 for up to 12 items; Clarington is appointment-only. None of them take renovation debris, and all of them need the items at the curb by 7 a.m. Our city garbage-collection pages spell out each municipality's current rules.
How much does large item pickup cost?
Volume pricing: $55 minimum and $35 per cubic yard, including the carry-out and the disposal. A single appliance is $55–$150 depending on its size and location; single furniture pieces are quoted from a photo. Text a picture to (905) 999-4426 for a firm number.
Do I have to bring the items to the curb?
No — carrying them out is the point of the service. We take items from basements, upper floors, condo units, garages and backyards. If you'd rather stage them at the curb or driveway yourself, you'll get the lower curbside rate.
How fast can you come?
Most large-item pickups happen within 24 hours, and same-day service is available across Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle and Scarborough when a slot is open.
